: Urban Voyage
The Urban Voyage project was put together by Pol Belardi at the end of his studies at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. It was meant to be a finale to his 6 years of living abroad, and at the same time reflecting the euphoria to start over with fresh adventures. He fancied the idea of writing one large piece telling a story, being concise and connected in both a thematic way (musically speaking) as well as in the statement found within the lyrics.
The result is a 25-minute-long suite for voice, rhythm section (piano, synths, guitar, vibraphone, drums and bass) and a 4-part horn section, expressing the thoughts of an overthinking person that took the step of leaving the countryside to enter the big city in pursuit of his/her dreams, thus encountering all sorts of new temptations, dangers, challenges and experiences of all kinds.
Stylistically, the work is strongly rooted in what could be called “Urban” music, meaning groove music, electronic sounds, beats, spoken word, yet without forgetting the tradition, the past, represented by influences from jazz and impressionistic music, and enough room for improvisation.
The band won “The Records” of the Keep An Eye Foundation in September 2014, which allowed for the recording of their debut album, officially released on March 2016 on Swiss label Unit Records.
: Pol Belardi
From the moment Pol played his first note on an instrument, sometime in the 90’s in a small town in Luxembourg, his curiosity was awakened to create music. After extensive tutelage in classical percussion, piano, drums and theory, a fair amount of classical orchestra as well as rock band experience, he set sails to study in Brussels and Amsterdam, earning a master’s degree in bass guitar in 2014. He has forged himself a strong credo consisting of two main ingredients: polyvalence and creativity.
His numerous projects vary in both conception of style and the instrument(s) he plays, and since the first childhood composition try-outs (which were mainly transcribing and rearranging video-game music), he has grown to a prolific composer.
Now back in Luxembourg, Pol leads his own bands Pol Belardi's Force (a modern jazz quartet/quintet) and Urban Voyage, an 11-piece crossover mammoth project based in Amsterdam. In addition to that, he is a member of DillenDub, a co-lead electro-groove-jazz trio.
He is also a welcomed sideman on the bass guitar for Pascal Schumacher (LU), MetroMara (DE), Little Known Facts (NL) as well as on the vibraphone for Nelson Ogliastri’s "Birth and Death of a Star" and many other projects.
Bandmembers in Urban Voyage: Loran Witteveen (piano), Eran Har Even (guitar), Jeroen Batterink (drums), Natanael Ramos Garcia (trumpet), Pit Dahm (vibraphone), Efe Erdem (trombone), Fernando Sanchez (baritone), Itai Weissman (saxophone), Mara Minjoli (vocals), Jérôme Klein (synths), Pol Belardi (bass and composition)
