ONJL6

Founded in 2005, the ONJL came together to provide a platform for the up and coming talented Jazz musicians to hone their skills, write for large ensemble and play with high caliber musicians.

The ONJL has had the pleasure of collaborating with Jazz greats George Duke and Didier Lockwood and establishing a working relationship with them, which led both artists to be featured on the jazz ensemble's debut album released in 2007 on WPR Jazz, which featured composition by Gast Waltzing. That same year, the ONJL toured Europe, performing with Grammy Award winner Paquito d'Rivera.

The ONJL performed twice with Grammy and Tony Award winner Jazz diva Dee Dee Bridgewater at the Festival International Echternach in Luxembourg.

The ONJL looks to contribute to the renewal of the repertoire for large jazz ensemble. Each member of the band is encouraged to contribute compositions and arrangements to the band and the ensemble actively seeks outside contributors and collaborations. In this manner, a large and varied new original repertoire for large ensemble is created, with compositions and arrangements ranging from the standard Big Band setting to more ecletic ones, combining jazz rhythm sections to horns and strings.

In 2010, the Orchestre National de Jazz Luxembourg releases its second album entitled 'Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Band'. Guitarist and composer David Laborier takes charge of the orchestra, introducing a new program of original compositions. The Album was presented to the public with great success in the beginning of 2011. For this occasion, the ONJL invited german Jazz musician and comedian Helge Schneider as a special guest.

In 2012, the ONJL welcomed bass great Richard Bona for a concert at the Philharmonie Luxembourg which took place in the context of the Festival International Echternach, featuring arrangements of Bona’s music by Gast Waltzing and David Laborier. That same year, the ONJL organized its first Composition Contest, an initiative meant to encourage composers to submit works to the orchestra’s repertoire.

2013 saw the ONJL tour Russia and Japan, with a show at the Sapporo City Jazz Festival with world-renowned vocalist Keiko Lee.

For the 2014 edition of the Festival International Echternach, the ONJL welcomed Swedish Jazz vocalist Viktoria Tolstoy.

True to the ONJL’s original idea of providing a platform for up and coming Jazz artists, young Jazz violin prodigy Jean-Jacques Mailliet is given the opportunity to write for large Jazz ensemble in 2015, which led to the release of his first album containing only his original material.

2016 sees the release of the ONJL’s first album containing only arrangements of existing material. The album ‘D’Pierle Vum Da’ marks the Orchestre National de Jazz Luxembourg’ tribute to its country of origin, featuring arrangements of Luxembourg’s most popular songs by David Laborier and Jean-Jacques Mailliet.

A program of brand new original works by Gast Waltzing, concerts and recordings with Japanese singer Shiho of Fried Pride, as well as with French singer Morgane Ji, are in the works for 2017.

ONJL featuring Shiho :

A well-known Jazz diva in Japan for her leading role in the famous Jazz duo « Fried Pride », Shiho is a true diamond-in-the-raw when it comes to European stages. At the end of 2016, she had a close collaboration with Luxembourg based, Grammy winning conductor and arranger Gast Waltzing, performing symphonic arrangements of her music in Luxembourg with the Orchestre Pasdeloup. The recording of this concert will be soon see its international release on the RCA Victor record label.

Shiho’s energetic and sensual voice just begs to be accompanied by a Big Band, which is why the Orchestre National de Jazz Luxembourg has set itself as a goal to present this exceptional singer to

European audiences, featuring new arrangements and compositions, all « made in Luxembourg ».

Here is a video performance of Shiho.
