David Laborier 1 - by Marie Luise Kamerer

After completing his studies in the U.S.A. and the Netherlands (Berklee in Boston and the Royal Conservatoire in Den Haag) David Laborier released his first original album in 2003, titled "David Laborier Trio" for WPRJazz. Thanks to regular performances with various formations and top bills David Laborier has made a name for himself as one of the great new talents in jazz guitar.

His group has built up a loyal following in Luxembourg, Belgium and France, astounding audiences with a clever blend of the jazz spirit and the raw energy of rock music. They are performing original compositions that have been described as "a blaze of electric jazz guitar inspired by the timeless 70's rock sound."

Laborier's second album "Tease" (WPR Jazz), is a highly individual musical statement made up of fusion, cool and modern jazz. Some of the compositions are thoroughly arranged, some more improvised, some are lyrical, some frenetic, some with loony motives, it masterfully blends both acoustic and electric elements.

His third solo album is titled "Ye Ole Truckstop" (WPR Jazz). "Ye Ole Truckstop" stems from a close collaboration between Laborier's group members. It features a strong group sound, heavily influenced by the ‘70's rock sound.

Luxembourg based guitarist introduced his new project David Laborier & Three’s A Crowd in May 2012 at the ‘Like A Jazz Machine’ festival in Dudelange, Luxembourg. With a repertoire of compositions written by the bandleader, the trio composed of David Laborier (guitars & compositions), Michel Pilz (bass clarinet) and Carlo Nardozza (trumpet) has earned critical acclaim for their debut performance. Three’s A Crowd aims at exploring the sonic and atmospheric possibilities a drum-and-bass-less trio can offer, combining through composed material to the individual improvisational styles of its members. David Laborier & Three’s A Crowd went into the studio in December 2012 and recorded their debut album entitled ‘Choices’ released in July 2013.

David Laborier is a prolific artist and participates to many different projects. He works closely with Gast Waltzing on Largo project, contributed 3 arrangements on the luxemburgish production featuring the Beninese-born singer Angélique Kidjo, conductor Gast Waltzing and the Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg which received the Grammy for best World Music Album and contributed a number of compositions and arrangements to the repertoire of the Orchestre National de Jazz Luxembourg.

Press:

"His (Laborier’s) command of both busy, note-heavy rhythmic lines and more sparse, easy breathing melodies was impressive, but his composing and, above all, astute harmonizing with his two accompanists, also caught the ear." Kevin Le Gendre – Echoes Magazine, UK
