: Joint Venture Percussion Duo
Joint Venture Percussion Duo is made up of Laurent Warnier (Luxembourg) and Rachel Xi Zhang (China). Since the Duo's inception in 2007, the collaboration between them has reflected a blend of cultural and musical influences. Coming from vastly contrasting backgrounds, Warnier and Zhang found common ground through percussion, where they fused their individual ideologies to form the uniquely international duo that they are today.
They won the Bernard Haitink Prize during the 2011 edition of the Vriendenkrans Competition of Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw. The duo was awarded a 9-concert tour throughout the premier halls of the Netherlands including Amsterdam's Concertgebouw and the Muziekgebouw in Eindhoven; furthermore, they are recipients of a scholarship from the Bernard Haitink Fund and the Emerging Artist Grant from the St. Botolph Foundation in Boston.
In China, Joint Venture played venues such as the Beijing National Centre for the Performing Arts, Shanghai Oriental Arts Center and Shenzhen Symphony Hall, in addition to recitals and masterclasses at numerous conservatories. They made their Concerto debut with the Shenzhen Symphony Orchestra for which they received high critical acclaim. Besides, Rachel and Laurent were a featured duo at such diverse events as the Big Bang International Percussion Festival in the Netherlands, Zeltsman Marimba Festival in the U.S., the International Marimba Festival Tabasco in Mexico and the International Percussion Festival of Luxembourg.
The Duo constantly strives to contribute to the field of contemporary music, and to date have premiered new compositions written for them by composers from China, Luxembourg, U.S.A., Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Israel, Great Britain and Uzbekistan.
Furthermore, together with the pianist Pascal Meyer, they form the trio Machine à trois.
